I apologize for the extreme delay in replying to your email; perhaps you saw after you wrote that this that The Smart Set unfortunately ceased publishing at Drexel University back in July due to budgetary constraints. In checking our WordPress email, I came across your message and at least wanted to do a cursory search and reply to you. I did look to see if the original THE SMART SET, a monthly literary magazine founded by founded by Colonel William d’Alton Mann and edited by H. L. Mencken — the inspiration for this version of The Smart Set which began publishing at Drexel in 2007 — had any relationship to the Frederick A. I read that Custer was decapitated, with arrows forced into his ears and penis. (Because he didn’t listen, and they didn’t want him to enjoy his afterlife?) How is that not mutilated? The decapitation would also explain why it would be hard to identify him. Especially with wolves and coyotes trying to make it through the winter. Also, in response to Bruce Ramsey: I don’t think you realize how remote the battlefield was. Would you want to bring a stinking corpse back on a horse for hundreds of miles? And, I wouldn’t discount their fear of Indian attack. They were reminded of the horror every time they looked at the battlefield.
