Critical theories are neither critical not theories in scientific sense.Lacan is an intellectual imposter.In the first place, psychoanalysis itself is a pseudo -science . Hence, anything built upon it is bound to collapse.

This essay seems typical to me of the kinds of misunderstandings that arise when non-analysts are allowed to attend training for analysts. This author mistakenly thinks Lacan is talking about them personally. He is caught in an imaginary relation and so entirely misunderstands.

In reply to Robert Kramer. I think it is worth bearing in mind who Lacan was speaking to in his 4Fs. It was analysts primarily. He was trying to assert his view of subjectivity, not trying to be at the centre of a person's subjectivity (as this author imagines). He was trying to be at the centre of competing definitions of subjectivity. The discomfort felt by this author, when imagining that Lacan is speaking directly to him and about him, is an imaginary act. This misunderstanding of the context of his speech is curiously linked to his misunderstanding of what Lacan means by the subject who speaks.

The Big Other (A) is not “others” but the Unconscious as a structure (of language). The small ‘a’ is not others either, but a lack that comes from the fact that mirroring (chirality) is a cut not the imaginary duplication it seems to be. Your misreading leads to a hopeful (Levinasian) ethical idea of intersubjectivity, which overlooks and underestimates the role of misidentification, which René Girard takes up, in a very interesting way, as rivalry. Lacan’s mathematics is not algebra but projective geometry. What ‘Penny’ says shows that she does not know the first thing about the relation between the Fibonacci series, audio activity (Conway Constant), and Lacan’s unary trait. Insults are the first thing that come to mind when curiosity becomes frustration.

When I read Lacan’s pseudo-mathematical baloney:
“The male principle is the square root of minus one.”,
I immediately saw him as a fool and a phony.

Concluding paragraph echoes Aristotle. The unconscious is prime matter; lacks form; ‘yearns’ and ‘stretches out’ for form. Takes linguistic/symbolic form in dreams, jokes, parapraxes, neuroses; the entelechies of the unconscious.

Lacan is not the French Freud. He is the French Groucho Marx. Read Lacan for the laughs, not for theory or practice. He is VERY funny … if you know how to how to read his puns. Happily, they usually come across in English translation as well as in the French original. Example: just think about all the meanings of the phrase “the cause” in Lacan. The man was a genius at jokes, far funnier than even Freud.
