Those are for another day. Factually though, while the poem was professionally published in 1915, Eliot had already written it by 1911. The war would start the next year and, IMO, this does not connect to post-war feelings if the war in reference is WW One.

Why do they willingly follow the opinion of the majority?” The same, alas, can be asked of adults. Because whether it’s accepting without question what the minister in the church is saying or the politician on the Internet, adults have been doing this same thing since time immemorial. As I read this piece, I wanted desperately to blame it on standardized testing and on the binary thinking social media is so fond of… until I had to admit that my own generation behaved the same way too. I think that’s why there are artists in the world. They are the ones that can live with ambiguity.
